Captain Pike cautiously raised the trapdoor and peered out. He’d lifted up a rug in front of a fireplace. The surroundings were those of a small cottage. Facing him was a man in an armchair, sitting with an automatic pointed at him and a glass of Guinness at his elbow. It was the Ulsterman.

‘Now…’ he smiled, ‘I suppose you’re wondering why I called you here today?’

‘Yeah.’ Pike climbed out of the trapdoor. ‘Got any real beer?’

‘Red Barrel?’

Pike shrugged. ‘Hell, that’ll do. I’m not about to go out for a six‐pack.’ Behind him, the Brigadier emerged from the trapdoor, levelling his pistol at the Irishman.

‘Don’t fret, Brigadier,’ the man told him. ‘I wouldn’t have freed you if I was going to kill you, now would I?’ He put down his automatic. ‘I just didn’t want you lot to leap in and shoot me.’

The Doctor hopped up into the room. ‘We haven’t been introduced,’ he said. ‘I’m the Doctor. These are my friends.’

‘The Doctor!’ The man laughed and stood up, extending his hand. ‘The name’s Kevin Doyle. If everything I’ve heard about you is true, you certainly deserve a pint!’
